Lowell Observatory

Starting Jan. 31, Lowell Observatory will reopen General Admission with updated guest protocols. The Omicron variant, which led to a spike in positive COVID-19 tests earlier this month, is in decline here in Coconino County. Due to this and the nature of Omicron’s transmissibility and virulence, Lowell Observatory will no longer require a negative test or proof of vaccination for entry. Masks will be required indoors at all times, and science talks inside the Visitors Center will be temporarily suspended. Lowell Observatory public-facing staff are fully vaccinated and will wear N95 masks at all times while indoors. We strongly encourage others in our community to do the same to help prevent further spread of COVID-19. Museum of Northern Arizona

Don’t be fooled by the small stature of this museum – it houses an astounding collection of exhibits focusing on the area’s anthropology, biology, geology and art. Visitors will find artifacts and exhibits focusing on regional Native American tribes, outdoor exhibits of local plants and wildlife, and even a life-size skeletal model of Dilophosaurus, a dinosaur that once roamed northern Arizona. Permanent exhibits include: Geology Gallery – Features geologic models, fossils and mineral specimens. The exhibits in this area introduce you to the many changes the Colorado Plateau has undergone through millions of years of geologic and volcanic activity. This gallery houses the life-size skeletal model of Dilophosaurus, a carnivorous dinosaur found in northern Arizona. Lockett Fine Arts Gallery – Guests can find exemplary fine arts of the region in this gallery. The Lockett and the Chase Gallery also highlight some of the Museum’s own outstanding collection of easel art and sculpture. Ethnology Gallery – The Museum’s award-winning permanent anthropology exhibit, Native Peoples of the Colorado Plateau, documents 12,000 years of occupation in the region. The Ethnology Gallery enlightens visitors about the daily lives of tribes today, many of whom balance traditional lifestyles with jobs and activities outside their reservations. Babbitt Gallery – An intimate gallery complete with a reading area and fireplace. This exhibit features 151 prehistoric and contemporary ceramic vessels from both the Babbitt Collection and Museum of Northern Arizona’s general collections. Biology – The Old Courtyard features a Life Zone Exhibit, where visitors are introduced to the extraordinary diversity of the Colorado plateau climate. During the spring, summer and fall, outdoor exploration opportunities are available on the museum campus. Visitors can stroll along the nature trail and visit the amphibian pond to see local plants and wildlife. Written nature trail guidebooks are available at the Admissions Desk.

Northern Arizona Audubon Society (NAAS) is the local chapter of the National Audubon Society, with membership in Sedona, Flagstaff, and surrounding communities. Members are active in birding, conservation, and education. Monthly meetings and field trips are currently on hold due to the covid-19 pandemic. The Movement Baton Twirlers is a group of children ages 3-20 from all over Northern Arizona. They perform and compete all over the United States. Places that they have performed are Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Hollywood CityWalk, Carnival Cruise, Paradise, Seaport Village, Hawaii Pearl Harbor and Sea World. They have traveled to Florida, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Georgia, Savannah, Atlanta, Texas, Austin, San Antonio, California, Stockdan, Brentwood. They are the 1994-2018 Arizona State Champions and the 1994, 1997, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2014, and 2018 Nationals Champions. They are coached by Tamara Abeyta. "Back when Arizona was a territory and vigilantes ruled the dirt streets, John W. Weatherford rode into these parts by horse and buggy with a grand vision for the West. On the very first day of the new century, Weatherford threw open the doors of his grand hotel — doors that would welcome presidents and gunslingers alike to a civilized oasis in the wild, dusty West. Since then, this fabulous building has housed Flagstaff’s first telephone exchange company, a number of restaurants, a theater, a radio station & a billiard hall. It survived fire, harsh weather, two world wars & a planned demolition. After 20 many years of restoration work, we are proud to share the Weatherford Hotel & Flagstaff’s pioneer beginnings. Thomas Moran spent many nights here completing sketches of the western landscape in the early 1900’s. His breathtaking depictions of the wilderness moved Congress to preserve such places as the Grand Canyon & Yellowstone National Parks. Cowboy author, Zane Grey, wrote Call of the Canyon while staying at the Weatherford. His descriptions of the hotel lead owner, Henry Taylor, to discover original fireplaces that had been covered with plaster & hidden in the walls. President Theodore Roosevelt & publisher Randolf Hearst were among the hotel’s guests. Nearly 100 years ago, the local newspaper, The Coconino Sun, claimed the Weatherford to be "first class in every aspect" –a tradition & standard we will continue to uphold." The Weatherford is more than a historic hotel – it’s an entertainment complex nestled in the vibrant heart of Flagstaff’s historic downtown district. In addition to seventeen boutique hotel rooms, we feature a restaurant, three pubs / bars with food (Charly's Pub & Grill, The Gopher Hole Pub, and The Zane Grey Ballroom, Bar, & Balcony), catering services, live entertainment and several venues for events. Nestled between the Painted Desert and ponderosa highlands of northern Arizona, Wupatki seems like an unlikely landscape for a thriving community. In the early 1100s during a time period of cooler temperatures and wetter seasons the ancestors of contemporary Pueblo communities created a bustling center of trade and culture. For many Indigenous peoples these sites represent the footprints of their ancestors. Trails are open Sunrise to Sunset Wupatki Visitor Center is open 9am - 4:30 pm (Closed December 25th, January 1st, and Thanksgiving Day)
