Sacred Mountain Prayer Run

The San Francisco Peaks, sacred mountains to the neighboring tribes provide a scenic background, Ancient legends surround the sacred mountains, which continue to be a source for spiritual strength. The race is called a Prayer Run because of a practice initiated by Native Americans as a means of "putting feet" to prayers as a tradition, or in other words, putting "action to our prayers". A prayer run also serves as a purification process for both the runner and situation for which the runner is praying . As the person runs, he/she experiences a process of individualized emotional, mental, physical and spiritual cleansing. Native American teachings say that The Creator will look kindly on and bless those who are not lazy, those who will take that extra step in helping him or herself and others. Native American elders say that if a person wants a long, healthy and productive life, one must rise before the sun and run before dawn because this is the most significant time for prayer and blessings. It is time for the Holy Ones to shower blessings on the Earth. The NACA Sacred Mountain Prayer Run was begun to honor the fact that the San Francisco Peaks are sacred to all people in many ways. For Native Americans, the sacredness of the San Francisco Peaks varies from tribe to tribe. It is particularly sacred to the Hopi and Navajo people. They believe that the Holy Ones and Kachinas make the Peaks their dwelling place or "home". Medicine people and elders of the tribes come to the Peaks to offer prayers and perform sacred ceremonies.

The steep terrain runners must face mirrors that difficult times and struggles we all endure in our lives, but when one reaches the top and starts back down the hill, there is no happier feeling than to have overcome that hill and feel that sense of accomplishment and goodness.

While Native American runners are targeted for participation in the 31st Annual Sacred Mountain 10K/5K Prayer Run due to the cultural significance of the race, distance runners of all ethnic backgrounds and ages come from around the region and the country to compete in the Sacred Mountain 10K/5K Prayer Run. The current course weaves through unpaved dirt and cinder trails within the Coconino National Forest. Local spring temperatures with low humidity are ideal for running. The course maintains an elevation of 7,000 feet from start to finish. Runners have described the course as "challenging".

All proceeds from the race benefit NACA clients with emergency needs such as food, shelter medical assistance, utilities , etc.
