This presentation by historian and river runner Tom Martin will include the sale of Jerry Cannon’s new book “The Navajo Bridge.” Proceeds from book sales at the event will benefit Riordan Mansion State Park.
Arizona territorial historian Sharlot Hall first championed a bridge across the Colorado River at Marble Canyon in 1911. Little happened until 1923 when Arizona Highway Department bridge engineer Ralph Hoffman used his brilliant bridge design skills to come up with the arch design. Congressman Carl Hayden pulled funds from the Navajo Nation Tribal Fund against protest from Tribal Chairman Chee Dodge.
