Lunchtime Virtual Lecture - Michael J. Riordan: A Young Man on the Frontier, 1885-1890
Michael J Riordan Courtesy of Riordan Mansion State Historic Park
Have you visited Riordan Mansion? Learn about Michael J. Riordan’s early experiences in northern Arizona and get a glimpse into the life of a young man who would become one of Arizona’s most important businessmen and community leaders.
In 1885, Michael J. Riordan was forced to abandon his studies to become a Jesuit priest and move to his brother’s home in Flagstaff, Arizona Territory. Like many other “lungers,” he was suffering from tuberculosis and his prognosis was grim. His brother, Matt, hoped the clean, dry air would help Michael recover from this deadly disease. While visiting and trying to recover, Michael traveled around the Territory and wrote descriptive articles, which he sent back East to be published.
