George and Duett Hunt, first Governor of Arizona and his wife, first met in 1890, when George first ran for Gila County Recorder. His goal was to visit with every family in Gila County, and he met Duett Ellison on one of those first visits. The young couple courted through letters for 14 years, from 1891 to their wedding in 1904. The letters range from just friendly conversations to frustrations to planning a wedding.

Plaza Circle in Miami, Az; February 15 at Riordan Mansion State Historic Park in Flagstaff, AZ at 7:00 p.m. The Park is located at 409 W. Riordan Road; and Wyndham Bear Paw Recreation Center, at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 16, in Flagstaff, AZ Admission to all events is FREE.
During the preparations for Arizona's Centennial year, Don Shields began researching George Hunt, Arizona's first Governor. Don is a former teacher relocating from Illinois. On Tuesdays one can find Governor Hunt (Don Shields) at the state capital in Phoenix. Duett Ellison Hunt was researched by Mary Brown in preparation for Arizona's Centennial Celebration in 2012. Mary is a former teacher, works at Riordan Mansion State Historic Park in Flagstaff, Arizona. Duett being very shy and retiring, only appears at state events on very special occasions.
