December 21: Mercy Aiken – Author, Speaker, Middle East Traveler, Peace Advocate
Every advent season, Bethlehem is remembered as a peaceful “little town” filled with singing angels. Few are aware of the modern existence of the city, or the challenges it faces. Mercy Aiken lived for almost three years in Bethlehem, where she worked in a small college serving the Palestinian Christian minority. From crossing crowded checkpoints to hikes through ancient olive groves, from refugee camps to classes at Hebrew University, from Ramadan iftar dinners to Shabbat celebrations in Jerusalem, she befriended Christians, Muslims and Jews and grew to understand the local issues from various perspectives. Along the way she met many people who are working for justice, equality and peace in the land. After returning to the United States, she wrote a book for a Palestinian friend, “Yet in the Dark Streets Shining” (available on Amazon) and today leads Israel/Palestine tours off the beaten track. Come follow along on a virtual tour of a contested land that is holy to three religions and allow Mercy to introduce you to some of its interesting people and places.
