Comet Talk: Antarctica - Ice Age Continent

The Antarctic is much more than merely an ice cube. It is a place of tremendous wildlife, both terrestrial and marine, unmatched scenery, surprisingly wonderful sunsets, and the only place on Earth where all countries have agreed to forego any and all military adventures.

Wayne Ranney first visited the Antarctic in 1986 with the United States Antarctic Research Program. His three months on “the ice” took him to the largest station on the Antarctic continent, McMurdo, and the only station located at the Earth’s South Pole, the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. He has since made 28 additional trips to the Antarctic over many different seasons. He has also traveled to the North Pole three times, serving as lecturer along with others including Buzz Aldrin and Hugh Downs.

In 1990, Wayne was nominated to and elected to the prestigious Explorer’s Club. He has visited over 90 countries in his career, working mainly as a geologic interpreter aboard shipboard expeditions, with groups such as the Smithsonian, National Geographic, and TCS World Travel. He has appeared in numerous television documentaries that have aired on the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, PBS, National Geographic, and Japanese television.
