Despite the fact that the Grand Canyon is widely recognized and universally loved, it’s surrounded on all sides by threats: mining activity, helicopter traffic, and massive development schemes. In order to explore this paradox, author Kevin Fedarko decided to do something drastic: to complete a mega-transect through the heart of the canyon by walking from Lees Ferry to Grand Wash Cliffs. Setting off in the fall of 2015, he embarked on what turned into an epic, illuminating, blister-inducing adventure of nearly 700 miles that will be featured in the September issue of National Geographic. He got a lot more than he bargained for.
