The Great American Eclipse

The August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse has been called the Great American Eclipse because it will be visible from only one country—the United States. Lowell Observatory will open early at 8 a.m. for viewing of this event.

Special Visitor Center hours: 8 a.m. – 10 p.m.
Solar telescope viewing: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Live stream of totality in Madras: 10:19 – 10:21 a.m.
Pinhole viewers and eclipse games: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Rotunda and Collection Center open houses: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Face painting: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Solar eclipse talk: 8:30, 9:30, 11:30 a.m.
Clark telescope viewing (Venus): 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Pluto tour: 2 p.m.
Clark tour: 3 p.m.

Self-guided eclipse activities available from (8 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
Food trucks: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Solar eclipse activities will be available until 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., we will switch to our normal evening schedule which can be found here: https://lowell.edu/outreach/things-to-do/

Admission tickets are valid for the entire day so visitors are welcome to stay or come back for our evening programs for no additional charge.
Please note that while totality will not be visible from Flagstaff, AZ, we will still be able to see the moon starting to cover the sun. The solar eclipse follows a path over the United States, crossing the country in a 73-mile wide diagonal band. While that arch covers the entire U.S., only the areas sitting directly beneath this path will experience total darkness.
