Clyde Tombaugh was hired at Flagstaff’s Lowell Observatory as part of a research team to find a distant “trans-Neptunian” planet Percival Lowell was convinced existed. Tombaugh’s work paid off, and the discovery of Pluto was announced on March 13, 1930.
