This national monument was formed by repeated volcanic eruptions nearly 1,000 years ago, when ash and lava created the sunset-hued cinders on the rim that gave the crater its name. Take the Lava Flow Trail, an easy one-mile loop that guides visitors through this otherworldly landscape.
