Back when Arizona was a territory and vigilantes ruled the dirt streets, John W. Weatherford rode into these parts by horse and buggy with a grand vision for the West. On the very first day of the new century, Weatherford threw open the doors of his grand hotel — doors that would welcome presidents and gunslingers alike to a civilized oasis in the wild, dusty West. Since then, this fabulous building has housed Flagstaff’s first telephone exchange company, a number of restaurants, a theater, a radio station & a billiard hall. It survived fire, harsh weather, two world wars & a planned demolition. After 20 years of restoration work, we are proud to share the Weatherford Hotel & Flagstaff’s pioneer beginnings. Thomas Moran spent many nights here completing sketches of the western landscape in the early 1900’s. His breathtaking depictions of the wilderness moved Congress to preserve such places as the Grand Canyon & Yellowstone National Parks. Cowboy author, Zane Grey, wrote Call of the Canyon while staying at the Weatherford. His descriptions of the hotel lead owner, Henry Taylor, to discover original fireplaces that had been covered with plaster & hidden in the walls. President Theodore Roosevelt & publisher Randolf Hearst were among the hotel’s guests. Nearly 100 years ago, the local newspaper, The Coconino Sun, claimed the Weatherford to be "first class in every aspect" –a tradition & standard we will continue to uphold.
