“Yes And...”: Improv for Writers

“Yes And...”: Improv for Writers

Presented by Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library at Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library

“What can writers learn from improv?” It’s a question we all ask ourselves. Okay, hardly anyone asks this. Alright, no one asks this. But if someone did—and they’d be very smart and sparkly-great for doing so—they could find out the answer by attending this extremely interactive Craft Talk.

First, we will go over the basics of improv. Volunteers will then get a chance to do basic improv warm-ups, and then two-person scenes. As we go, we will discuss as a group the benefits of these activities for writers.

Note: Participation in the improv exercises is not required but will (most likely) be extremely fun.

Matthew Henry Hall is a writer, cartoonist, and performer. His stories for children include The Lucky Hat, What Coyote Brought, and Phoebe and Chub. His cartoons appear in The Missouri Review, Reader’s Digest, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and many other publications. He’s opened for Richie Havens and Los Lobos, received a BA and MA in English (from places that really are accredited), and sometimes he takes improv classes in LA at the Groundlings School and the UCB Training Center. He believes his greatest legacy may be walking, biking, and taking public transportation whenever possible.
