Don Giovanni: The Live Opera Movie

Don Giovanni: The Live Opera Movie

Presented by Northern Arizona University, College of Arts and Letters at Ardrey Auditorium, Northern Arizona University Campus

Join our Lyric Theatre for a Lumberjack Opera that brings Mozart into the 21st century with high-tech projection mapping to set the scene behind our live singers and musicians as they tell the story of the infamous Don Juan, opera style.

Date and Time: March 31 @ 7:30 and April 2 @ 3 PM

Place: Ardrey Auditorium

Mozart's Don Giovanni touches on both the serious and the comedic as it retells the legend of Don Juan with the full voice drama of the opera. Like all Don Juans, Giovanni is irresistible yet irresponsible, an amoral man who loves women only slightly less than they love him. It doesn't take long before the audience sees the writing on the wall for our Giovanni, who is destined to face the consequences of his amoral life as a player without a stage.

Mozart's Don Giovanni is a musical masterpiece that showcases Mozart's greatest contributions to the development of opera. It was Mozart who first brought us vivid characters with fully human feelings and motivations as opposed to the one-dimensional stock opera characters previously en vogue.

In addition to Mozart’s innovations, our Lumberjack opera is being staged as a Live Opera Movie. While the singers sing and act in costume on stage, and the orchestra supports with the opera score from the pit, the scenery will be created with projection mapping – creating a living, shimmering world composed of projected light rather than a physical painted backdrop and set pieces.

Students in several programs within SBS and CAL have collaborated to make this program a success, including NAU student Morgan Norris who designed masks for the stage and worked with the Cline Library Maker Lab and Creation Commons Assistants to 3-d print them; our fabulous cast of vocal artists who have filled out two complete casts for the two performances; the orchestra, piano accompanist, voice coaches, and directors; as well as the students and professors designing the digital projection mapping files to set the scene. This innovative and cutting-edge scenic technology is created through the collaboration of Dr. Melanie Galloway, Artistic Director of Lyric Theater, Communications faculty Chris Johnson and Graham Haggerty, and students in the Motion Design Studios.

Those who would like to learn more about opera before the show are invited to the free pre-lectures before each showing to get a bit of background on Don Giovanni and opera in general. These lectures take place March 31 at 6:15, or April 2  at 2:15, both in Music Room 144.

Music lovers and those involved in scene production will be particularly interested in seeing this year’s Lyric Theatre production. This year’s production is an excellent example of modern story telling with classic subject matter, ready to spark the heart and mind of any creative looking for a new way to tell a timeless tale.

Dr. Melanie Galloway, KSOM faculty, serves as the Artistic and Stage Director of Lyric Theater
