What is the “Primordial Light Show? Legendary accounts speak of a Light Show that was spawned by a mysterious professor at San Francisco State in the mid 1950’s, when Poetry and Jazz and the action painting of Jackson Pollock were cutting edge, who would gather from the music department gongs, cymbals, timpanies, trombones and musicians who would improvise to brilliant colored flowing forms created in moving water projected onto a screen. Somehow escaping from the academic surroundings it spread as an underground art - music form among the fringes of the more spiritually oriented late Beat Generation… out of this context came the Spontaneous Sound presentations of Christopher Tree…an internationally recognized artist who spread his impulse of totally spontaneous concertizing from Bohemian hideaways in the canyons of Los Ángeles and Big Sur to the cathedrals and concert halls of New York, Paris and Berlin and even the Caves of Prophecy in Delphi, Greece…Other artists who participated in this “primordial light show” went on to project those huge pulsating bubbly forms on the halls of the Fillmore Auditorium to help create the all encompassing sensory immersion of 110 decibal Psychedielic Rock in the late 60’s… from a certain point of view turning the original impulse— an earnest and soulful search for the source of artistic inspiration within— into it’s opposite…
