Paper Cranes to Hiroshima

Paper Cranes to Hiroshima

Presented by Northern Arizona University, College of Arts and Letters at Babbit Academic Annex, Room 107

After World War II’s conclusion, a young Japanese girl by the name of Sadako Sasaki developed Leukemia - untreatable at the time - and began folding as many paper cranes as she could, having been familiar with the Japanese legend that anyone who could fold 1,000 origami cranes would have a wish granted. Though Sadako died in 1955, in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park there stands a statue of her. In memory of her efforts, origami cranes are left at Peace Memorial Park to memorialize ancestors and to wish for peace. On April 7th, students and community members will attempt to string together as many paper cranes as can be made during the event’s duration so that we can send our well wishes from the United States to Peace Memorial Park.

This event is free and open to the public.
