Saints, Martyrs And Muses—Day of the Dead Art Installation

Saints, Martyrs And Muses—Day of the Dead Art Installation

Presented by Emma Gardner at 216 South Beaver Street

Local artist Emma Gardner is creating an outdoor installation in the Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos tradition, honoring local and national friends and icons who have passed away this year. The installation, "Saints, Martyrs and Muses" will be open to the public Monday, November 2, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 216 South Beaver Street. The installation, located in Gardner’s front lawn, will include a Community  or altar, for attendees to contribute to. Feel free to walk by anytime and check out the progress. "Saints, Martyrs and Muses" will be finished on Sunday November 1, for a ‘sneak peek’. Social distancing and mask wearing protocols appreciated.

Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a traditional Mexican holiday celebrated November 2. On this day, it is believed that the souls of the dead return to visit their living family members. Family photographs, candles, yellow marigolds, copal, calaveras or skeletons, salt, water, pan de los muertos or bread of the dead, and sugar skulls representing the sweetness of life decorate ofrendas or altars. Gardener invites participants to bring flowers or flame-less candles to the Community Ofrenda. She is also creating coloring pages to pick up at MartAnnes Burrito Palace to complete and place on the ofrenda.

Day of the Dead is holiday of celebration, joy, laughter, music, and stories honoring those whose lives were well lived. Gardner’s front yard will be transformed into a welcoming space and opportunity for reminiscing about our loved ones. Instruments, costumes and merriment welcome. Parking will not be available on site. Please park in the neighborhood and walk or bike to the installation. Come celebrate and participate the Community Ofrenda.  Feliz Dia de los Muertos!
