Interact with Sheriff Driscoll at the Art in Action Gallery

Presented by Church of the Epiphany at Church of the Epiphany

As part of Flagstaff’s First Friday ArtWalk, the Open Doors: Art in Action Gallery will present a panel discussion and Q and A featuring Sheriff Jim Driscoll, the Hon. Fanny Steinlege, Superior Court, Division VIV, Jim Bret, program manager of the Detention Center, Sixto Valdiva, Recovery Court Coordinator and Michael Vaughn, Exodus Program Counselor.

The panel will explain the philosophy that guides the Coconino Criminal Justice system and the programs that implement their philosophy which works toward a restorative rather than punitive approach. These include opportunities for diversion and treatment for those with mental health and addiction issues as well as preparation for re-entry. Local non-profits and over 100 volunteers work in the jail to assist in treatment, therapy, job placement, and creative expression.

Fresh Start, Adult Probation, the Literacy Center and Exodus all employ art and poetry as part of rehabilitation efforts. Examples of local detainee’s work are on display as part of Locked Up: Pain and Resilience, the current exhibit at the gallery which features art by incarcerated persons from five states as well as Arizona. The exhibit, the ninth in the series which combines art with programs designed to raise awareness of social, environmental, and justice issues, will close December 7.

The panel discussion will begin at 7:00 pm following an hour of browsing the exhibit accompanied by music by Shawn Dennehy and Matt Sarnoski, and a buffet of appetizers provided by the hospitality committee at Epiphany.

The Church is located at 423 N. Beaver and free parking is available at the rear of the church. The event is free to the public.
