The Science of Stretching: Biomechanics and Neuromechanisms, with Jules Mitchell M.S., ERYT 500: An introduction to biomechanics and tissue properties paves the way for an investigation into what is actually occurring under the skin when we stretch. Yet, understanding musculoskeletal tissue behaviors and mechanical adaptations are only part of improving range of motion. The nervous system, including sensory input and motor output during stretching exercises, is the primary factor in achieving possible joint positions.
Key points of study include:
• Distinguish between mechanical & metaphorical language
• Learn what stretching does and does not do
• Dispel common myths around stretching
• Connective tissue injuries and the healing process
• Reconstruct anatomy through a tensegrity model
• Mechanoreceptors and sensory input
• Muscle physiology and motor output
This course is mostly lecture, but we will be moving at least once an hour. Wear comfortable clothes, bring a journal and any props you may need to keep you comfortable.

About Jules Mitchell
Jules Mitchell M.S., a Yoga Therapist and Exercise Scientist, combines the tradition of yoga with her education in biomechanics to help people move better. Jules extensively researched the science of stretching for her Master’s Thesis Project which she is currently editing for publication. In the meantime, she educates the public about stretching through her blog and lectures. www.julesmitchell.com
