Event 1: Open Mic Night: Word! – Words and Political Expression

Event 2: Hip Hop Beats & Indigenous Rhymes, Interactive Keynote Talk w/ Dr. Kyle Mays, w/ post “Blue Table Talk” on race & representations in Hip Hop w/ the Black Leadership Summit AND FREE FOOD (starting at 5p)!!!

Tuesday, April 16, 2019, 5:00-8:30pm, Ashurst Auditorium
Dr. Mays (UCLA) will explore the relationship between Black Americans and Indigenous peoples, moving from the foundations of the United States until the current Hip Hop era. Dr. Mays will lead an interactive dialogue with Black Leadership Summit II/NAU Greek Life and the audience. Co-hosted by Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc.; Black Leadership Summit Pt. II; NAU Fraternity & Sorority Life.

Event 3: Indigenous Hip Hop & Street Art

Event 4: Movement as Expression & Resistance – Hip Hop Dance Showcase

Featuring UNITY Dance Crew, Worldwide, NAU BadJacks, DJ 001, w/ Sigma Gamma Rho and Phi Beta Sigma (Steps & Stroll), and hosted by ya fav verse queen Lissette Flores!

 

Hip Hop is more than mere rap music. It is a way of life, culture and expression.It is complex, yet accessible. Its chief components may be categorized into five different elements:

The contemplated week will showcase each of the five elements both singularly and collectively. This way, NAU students will become adequately exposed to the nuances of Hip Hop not readily apparent in music videos and Top 40 playlists.

 

Admission Info

The Kickoff Concert on Friday April 12h is $20 for community members and $10 for NAU students. All other Hip Hop Events are free and don't require tickets.
