Dive into Natural Dyes w/ Tasha Griffith

at Coconino Center for the Arts

Learn everything you need to know to begin working with natural dyes or to switch your creative practice from chemical dyes to use colors from nature. We’ll cover the best practices to get vibrant colors on animal and plant fibers, using dyes from our local area, as well as those from the kitchen and around the world. We’ll bust myths, dig into science, and get creative for truly amazing, nuanced colors using sustainable methods. You’ll leave with samples of all the colors we make, and a solid foundation to begin your own explorations.

Experience: All levels are welcome/no experience necessary.

Materials included with the fee: $25 (Includes all dyes, mordants, sample yarns, propane for burners, etc.)

Students should bring:

Comfortable clothing and shoes which you don’t mind getting dye on. We’ll be working outside and it may be hot, so bring water, a sun hat, and whatever else you need to keep yourself comfortable.
Rubber gloves
Notebook
Optional: A skein of undyed yarn (up to 4 oz) to dye for use in your own projects. This can be either animal fiber (wool, silk, alpaca, etc.) or plant fiber (cotton, linen, hemp etc.), but must be all natural (no synthetic fiber content).
A waterproof container to take wet yarn home in.
Tasha Griffith has been a lover of handmade goods since she was a child. Her mother made most of her clothes and she had access to tools and materials at a young age. Today Tasha is a skilled craftsman specializing in felting, knitting, embroidery, and more. She believes that the key to a more sustainable, empowered, and grounded life can be found by using your hands to make things. In her classes, students gain a strong understanding from her tutorials and cultivate a connection to their projects. Her style of education uses hands-on experimentation and a supportive environment. The goal of Tasha’s workshops is to make sure every person leaves with a new set of skills and ideas that they can enhance and share with others.
