Sea of Tranquility Hike

Sea of Tranquility Hike

Presented by Coconino National Forest, Flagstaff Ranger District at Flagstaff Ranger District

Visit Crater Field 1, an area on the Coconino National Forest used to train astronauts in the 1960s in advance of the Apollo mission to the moon. Crater Field 1 was created in 1967 as a replica of the moon’s Mare Tranquilitatis or “Sea of Tranquility” where NASA intended to have the Apollo 11 astronauts set down for the their historic 1969 moon landing. We will meet at the Flagstaff Ranger Station and watch a short film depicting how the craters were made and then depart for the site. High clearance vehicles are not required.

Recommended to bring: Sturdy footwear, water, snacks.
Hiking Distance: Approximately 4-5 miles over uneven terrain and a moderate level of fitness is required for this trip.
