Talk on Yavapai-Apache Nation Forced March

Talk on Yavapai-Apache Nation Forced March

Presented by Museum of Northern Arizona at Museum of Northern Arizona

In 1875, an estimated 1,500 Yavapai and Apache were moved from the Rio Verde Indian Reserve to the Indian Agency at San Carlos, 180 miles away. This forced removal, now known as Exodus Day, resulted in scores of lives lost and the dramatic reduction of their native homeland in the Verde Valley. When finally allowed to leave San Carlos in 1900, only about 200 Yavapai and Apache made it back to their homeland in the Verde Valley. In this presentation, Russell-Winiecki will foster understanding for these two district cultures and the events that led to the modern day amalgamation of the Yavapai-Apache Nation.
