The NAU School of Music presents the NAU Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Steve Hemphill.
With repertoire for percussion trios, quartets, and quintets, plus the NAU Panoramic Steel Band, the concert will include Bob Becker's Away without Leave, a visit with the early days of military drumming, and Steve reich's Music for Pieces of Wood featuring a rhythmic journey of wooden claves. The performances also marks the premiere of Steve Hemphill's new quintet, Caves of Thailand, inspired by the 2018 rescue of twelve Thai boys from a mountain cave, which showcases instruments from the Southeast Asian region.
The concert will also feature works by Rüdiger Pawassar, Shaun Tilburg, Eugene Novotney, and Owen Clayton Condon. The NAU Panorama Steel Band will close the concert with three arrangements: Jobim's Girl from Ipanema, Alan Menken's Kiss the Girl, and Mama Look a Boo Boo, an upbeat Trinidadian calypso.
