Phoebe Hunt & The Gatherers

Phoebe Hunt & The Gatherers

at Coconino Center for the Arts

The group is not your typical roots/ folk band and has been wowing audiences since the release of their latest album, Shanti’s Shadow.

An accomplished Americana instrumentalist with foundations in jazz and swing music, Phoebe makes an impressive creative leap with this record. It’s the culmination of a five year journey that has taken her from her Austin roots through Music Row, Brooklyn, and even to India to study with seventh-generation master violinist Kala Ramnath.  These masterfully crafted songs are brought to life by the musicians Phoebe has gathered – each a virtuoso in their own right. Hunt also brought her Gatherers band to study music in India for a few weeks prior to this recording, and the songs reflect worldly instrumentation and composition.

Sounds of Americana and Texas Tinged Swing are woven with exotic rhythmic concepts culled from their time in India. Rolling Stone magazine describes the album as “Appalachian-style fiddle chops with Texas twang, Indian ragas, gypsy jazz, unfamiliar time signatures and the free-spirited fun of a jam band leader” May 2017.

Phoebe is skilled at taking seemingly disparate elements and pulling them together into a dazzling kaleidoscope of lush, coherent sound and rhythm patterns. The result is music that swells, crashes and breathes organically under Phoebe’s soulful, plaintive voice. Phoebe Hunt and The Gatherers are for fans of Abigail Washburn, the Punch Brothers, Norah Jones, and American folk singers with foreign influences.
