The Religious Left in Modern America Sabbatical

The Religious Left in Modern America Sabbatical

Presented by Northern Arizona University, College of Arts and Letters at Liberal Arts (Bldg. 18) Rm. 203

Recently, a spate of news articles has appeared heralding the appearance of faith-based progressive activism, following “40 years”—as one major account put it—“in which the Christian right has dominated the influence of organized religion on American politics.” Diverse in terms of gender, race, and sexual identity, this political force appeared as a refreshingly new component in both the political left and American civic religion. In fact, however, the religious left has had a rich and continuous history in the twentieth-century United States, although surely a history with its ups and downs.
