Prince Tamino, in his search for love and truth, sets on a quest to rescue a fair maiden, but is caught up in a sinister plot by powerful forces attempting to gain dominion over the sun. Set in a colorful fairy tale atmosphere, characters include Tamino, a handsome prince with his magic flute, Papageno, a simple bird catcher in search of a wife, and the evil Queen of the Night, who sings two of the most treacherous and infamous arias in the operatic repertoire.
Beloved as one of Mozart's most popular and enchanting works, The Magic Flute is one of the last operas Mozart wrote before his untimely death at the age of 35. This new production mixes the original German music with modern English dialogue, creating an experience that adheres to the style and tradition of the original German Opera, without sacrificing the accessibility of the English dialogue. This production will also feature supertitles, so audiences can follow along with the music as it occurs.
NAU Lyric Theater, the producing arm of the Vocal department at the NAU School of Music, produces musicals, operas, and operettas with full orchestra twice a year in various performance facilities throughout campus. Recent productions include The Pirates of Penzance, The NAU Lyric Opera Gala, Dido & Aeneas, Kiss Me, Kate!, Trouble in Tahiti, Signor Deluso, Il Campanello, and the world premiere of Beethoven’s Slippers by faculty composer Judith Cloud.
