Acting Workshop with Dawn Tucker

Acting Workshop with Dawn Tucker

Presented by Coconino Center for the Arts at Coconino Center for the Arts

Join Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival’s Dawn Tucker for a six-week acting intensive. This course is appropriate for everyone, from beginning actors looking for a springboard for their career to skilled practitioners honing their craft (and everyone in-between). Those seeking to enrich their life through artistic exploration will find the class helpful in everyday matters, from speech giving to mediation to self-awareness. Acting empowers us to understand not just what we hope to convey, but what others perceive and, thereby, how to increase the effectiveness of our communication tactics.

Focusing on the teachings of Stanislavsky, Meisner, and Linklater, the class will cover everything from increasing your vocal projection to connecting your acting choices to your characters intentions. Fine acting is a balance of practiced technique and emotional improvisation.

The class will begin with an introduction to auditioning: monologues, cold readings, and etiquette. The coursework culminates in a 10 minute scene for the final showcase. Actors will be encouraged to work with text that they are passionate about, but Dawn will also have materials available for every skill level.

Dawn has a Master’s Degree in Shakespeare in Performance from the American Shakespeare Center in partnership with Mary Baldwin College and a BFA in Theatre Performance from the University of Wisconsin. She worked for five years as an actor and the Director of Education for Southwest Shakespeare Company in Mesa, Arizona. In 2015, she founded the Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival with Jesse Kamps, Southwest Shakespeare Company, and Christine Schmidle, Shakespeare’s Globe. Dawn is a Flagstaff native. As an educator, Dawn has been fortunate to work with both high schoolers and adults within the education system at Veritas Preparatory Academy, Mesa Community College, and Coconino Community college as well as outside the education system through workshops and directing. Dawn directed FlagShakes’ Merry Wives of Windsor for which she is a Viola’s finalist in 2018. Dawn is also a Viola’s finalist in the category of Community Impact.
