Death Valley and Scotty’s Castle

Death Valley and Scotty’s Castle

Presented by Riordan Mansion State Historic Park at Riordan Mansion State Historic Park

Come hear about rocks that sail, fish that survive against all odds and the castle in the middle of nowhere. Scotty’s Castle is an architectural masterpiece, a sprawling home filled with original furnishings that resulted from an unlikely friendship between a loveable, hard-drinking con man and a devout, respectable millionaire.

Death Valley is a vast expanse of stark beauty and harsh extremes that attracts visitors from all over the world. The largest national park in the continental United States, Death Valley sizzles but it’s not just the climate. The hottest spot on the globe is one of the coolest places to visit with its golden canyons, caramel sand dunes, gleaming salt flats, and snowcapped mountains.

Roger Naylor is a travel writer who hates to travel. At least anywhere beyond the Southwest. He specializes in lonely hiking trails, twisting back roads, small towns, ghost towns and diners with burgers sizzling on the grill. His work appears weekly in the Arizona Republic. He has contributed to Arizona Highways, Western Art & Architecture, Go Escape, Route 66 Magazine, Sedona Magazine and dozens more. Naylor’s first book, Arizona Kicks on Route 66 came out in April 2012 and has gone through three printings. Currently, Naylor is working on a third book, an Arizona hiking and dining guide called Boots and Burgers, scheduled for a 2014 release. For more information, visit www.rogernaylor.com.
