Celebrate Free Speech Week by joining internationally-known artist/activist Karen Fiorito, the ACLU, NAU professors and a group of local actors/artists- presented by local activist organization Together We Will, Northern Arizona.
Karen Fiorito is a vegan artist and activist from Santa Monica best known locally for herPhoenix billboard "Trumpocalypse and Unity." The 2-sided billboard features a picture of President Trump surrounded by dollar signs resembling swastikas on one side. Fiorito said she chose the symbol because "we have a powerful businessman in power who wants total control of our government to suit his and his friends' and family's business interests. This man is trying to do away with our personal freedoms, including Freedom of the Press and Free Speech." The other side of the billboard on which the word UNITY is in both English and American Sign Language represents the collaboration of many in opposition to Trump, she said.
The ACLU will speak about their work in the courts to preserve individual freedoms and NAU professors will discuss the dire Renae's between free speech and hate speech and discuss recent events involving the alt right and protestors. Local actors will perform several short pieces including Sherman Alexie's new poem "Hymn." Vegan appetizers will be provided and drinks will be for sale. Proceeds benefit the ACLU of Arizona.
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at: www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3069618 and at the door. Price includes 3 hour event and vegan appetizers. Wine/beer/sodas/water will be for sale. Proceeds benefit the ACLU of Arizona.
