"No" Film Screening

Presented by Latin American Studies Committee at Liberal Arts Building, Rm. 120

A free screening of No (2012), directed by Pablo Larraín, a film which follows the 1988 referendum campaign to decide the fate of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. A “Yes” vote would mean eight more years of oppressive military leadership and a “No” would mean democratic elections to be held at the end of the year, the first democratic elections since the September 11, 1973 military coup which placed Pinochet in power. The movie stars Gael Garcia Bernal as René Saavedra, a young daring advertising executive who is hired by the leaders of the opposition to head the “No” campaign. With limited resources and under the constant scrutiny of the dictatorship’s watchmen, Saavedra and his team conceive of a plan to win the election and free their country from oppression

Free and open to the public. Sponsored by Latin American Studies. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles. A brief pre-screening summary of Chilean political as well as a post-film discussion will be facilitated by LAS director Robert Neustadt.
