Avtar Khalsa

Avtar Khalsa

Presented by Flagstaff Folk Project at Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation

Avtar started out at the age of 14 in a rock and roll band. As he got older, he switched to playing folk and country as a duo with a friend. And in later years he played solo in nondescript little bars and cafes, sometimes for pay, but mostly for tips, with an occasional drink or sandwich thrown in.  As life went on, he lived in a yoga ashram, spent some time in the army, got married, had kids, etc. During that time, he played small, intimate gigs for friends --- often around a campfire in the desert, or in somebody's living room, with an occasional benefit concert thrown in. More recently, though, he's been inspired to write songs and perform again in local venues.  Avtar's musical influences include Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, John Hartford, Nanci Griffith, Stephen Stills, Sarah McLachlan, Steve Earle, and Ramblin' Jack Elliot, to name just a few. We're sure that you will enjoy Avtar's easy singing and playing style at the Folk Project.
