Six million years ago much of present-day Coconino County was a featureless plateau yet unshaped by the forces of nature. Since then, two geological features of the county have been formed: 1) the Grand Canyon; and, 2) the San Francisco Volcanic Field. This 2.5 hour hike explores the later while contextualizing nearby volcanic growth in light of changes to the overall Colorado Plateau region. Participants will hike across the face of a once active volcanic dome, gaining insight into the powerful forces of nature which have shaped Coconino County Landscape.
Hike will take place at Fatman’s Loop at Mt. Elden. Transportation is provided. Please bring a backpack with water, a snack, and any other items you feel appropriate for a short hike.
Registration is required before the program date. Register online or at Fort Tuthill County Park.
