The Clothesline Project Art Installation

The Clothesline Project Art Installation

Presented by Northland Family Help Center at Heritage Square

In recognition of April as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Northland Family Help Center (NFHC) is displaying the Clothesline Project on April 28th on Heritage Square. The art installation will be up from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WHAT: The Clothesline Project is an art installation bringing light to the experiences of survivors of sexual and domestic violence and child abuse. Survivors decorate t-shirts telling their stories of interpersonal violence and abuse with art, poetry and prose.  NFHC hangs these t-shirts on clotheslines in Heritage Square annually. NFHC has participated in the Clothesline Project for 25 years and has collected hundreds of t-shirts made by local survivors and their loved ones to display. NFHC and other social service agencies will be present to provide resources for survivors and information on healthy relationships and violence prevention.

WHEN: Friday April 28th 2017, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. If weather does not permit it will take place on May 12th
WHERE: Heritage Square, Downtown Flagstaff, 111 W. Birch St. Flagstaff, AZ 86001
WHO: Sponsored by Northland Family Help Center. The art installation is free and open to the public.

History: The Clothesline Project was started in 1990 when it was discovered almost as many women died during the Vietnam War at the hands of their intimate partners as did American men fighting in the war. It has been a national campaign in April ever since. Visit www.clotheslineproject.org to learn more. “Hanging our dirty laundry out—We are no longer silent!”

“Through creative expression, adults and children recover a sense of renewal and power. Their images of hope, survival and strength educate the public and encourage steps to change their lives.” -Aileen Fitz, NFHC Executive Director
