"The Secrets of Bloom" by Janina Burton

Presented by Northern Arizona University, College of Arts and Letters at Riles Gallery, 2nd Floor

Janina Burton, an artist who specializes in fabric art, is presenting her original art for the children’s book she wrote and illustrated. The exhibition will include the journey of children’s book production. Janina has earned a bachelors’ degree in visual design and two masters’ degrees, one in education and the other in sustainable communities. The Secrets of Bloom communicates a sustainable story about a flower garden and how all its little critters work together, using their own special gifts, to create a beautiful, unified community. Janina’s goal is to share knowledge with very young children that working together having very diverse gifts can build a sustainable community. What very young children learn will stay with them for a lifetime. To support sustainability, the collage-inspired illustrations are assembled with 100% cotton quilting fabric, a renewable resource. Janina is currently teaching a class at Northern Arizona University, Elementary Art Education, for pre-elementary teacher students. Art is a powerful communication tool and has the power to develop critical thinking, creativity, and can be used to enhance the teaching of any subject and assist students to learn to create their own knowledge.
