The Flagstaff Alpine Ski & Snowboard Team (“FAST”) is a program of the Flagstaff Ski Club, and is organized as a local part of the larger U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association (USSA). The USSA is the national governing body for amateur competitive skiing and snowboarding in the U.S. Flagstaff is part of the Rocky Mountain Division of the USSA, along with ski clubs in New Mexico and Colorado. FAST provides a highly structured program designed so that each individual can reach his/her potential in competitive skiing and snowboarding. The racing program is broad-based, designed to accommodate all levels of skiing skills. However, we do not compete with the Snowbowl Ski School and reach non-skiers. All participants must be able to “ski/ride” the Snowbowl mountain and ride all lifts independently. Ski racing and snowboarding are individual sports requiring strength, stamina, commitment, focus, and concentration. These are positive life skills. Through their individual efforts, and at their own pace, the young athletes in our program develop these qualities, and can apply them to other areas of their lives. And best of all, the athletes are motivated to do this because it’s fun! Our season begins in September with dryland training to prepare our athletes for the slopes. Our on hill programs begin when the Arizona Snowbowl opens and generally lasts through March or April, depending on snow conditions. As our athletes grow, in both years and skill, they are invited to participate in other events (races, training) which extend the season and require travel to other parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado as part of the Rocky Mountain Division . As athletic skills increase, so may costs, commitments, and rewards. As a USSA member, the athlete may choose to attend out-of-town events, however, travel is not a prerequisite of participation. A desire to learn to ski better and to have fun is the only requirement.
