Lunchtime Lecture: “Here We Shall Plant the Tree of Research” The US Forest Service Fort Valley Experimental Forest

On a peaceful spot near Flagstaff is the nations’ first USFS research station first established in 1908 when the Riordans asked USFS Chief Gifford Pinchot to learn why ponderosa pine was not regenerating after logging. This presentation explains the history that set the groundwork for USFS research around the country.

Presenter Susan Olberding has been the volunteer historian/archivist for the Fort Valley Experimental Forest for over 30 years. She prepared and submitted the 2004 nomination of the Fort Valley Station to the National Register of Historic Places and is the coordinator for the Friends of Fort Valley, a volunteer group that works to preserve this historic site. She has published six books, two of which are about Fort Valley and are available for purchase.
