Join Flagstaff Arts Council for a 6 week Long- Form Improv Workshop with Garrison Garcia in 2019! Garrison’s passion for performing started at childhood with a living room magic show and might have peaked with his role of “Toy Soldier #3” in a community production of The Velveteen Rabbit. As a graduate student, he performed with NAU’s improv troupe, NAUghty Bits. Currently, Garrison can be found writing sketches, scripts, and cultivating local talent for The Foundry, Flagstaff’s only monthly, community variety show. Garrison is the founding member and creative director of Flagstaff’s premier improv comedy team, Tiny Punches. By “yes, and”-ing the offers life gives him, Garrison has discovered a passion for directing improv workshops and trainings and he firmly believes that anyone can do improv.
This workshop is designed to provide the participant with a thorough overview and foundational knowledge of longform improvisation concepts. Essential for beginners and experienced players alike, learners can expect a highly participatory and interactive experience, culminating in a student show. Concepts covered include creating a base reality, finding and playing game, character and scene work, and using openings to initiate scenes. No prior experience is necessary for enrollment in this workshop, only a willingness to try new things in a supportive and encouraging environment. After completing this workshop, individuals from varied backgrounds have commented about their improved ability to think on their feet, the greater sense of confidence they have in group interactions and public speaking, and the extremely positive experience of laughing for two hours straight each week.
