The Skydome was named for former University President Dr. J. Lawrence Walkup. (1958 - 1979). The Skydome is the third largest clear-span timber dome in the world. Nestled in the cool pines of Northern Arizona University's Campus, the Skydome opened on September 17, 1977; two years and eight million dollars after ground breaking.

The Skydome is a multipurpose building which provides facilities for football, basketball, indoor track and field, soccer, weight lifting, student recreation, major concert events, commencements, intramurrals, and a variety of other university and community activities.

The Skydome is the NAU center for the successful Athletics Department as well as Administrative Offices, Sports Information, NAU Trademark Licensing, and Fields and Facilities.
