Viola & The Brakemen, Pilcrow and Michelle Louise

at Coconino Center for the Arts

Michelle Louise is a singer-songwriter currently operating out of the American Southwest. After spending many years pursuing a higher education and earning a law degree, Michelle put her legal career on hold to pursue her passion for music. She spent over 5 years honing her craft in the San Francisco band dinnerwiththekids before relocating. In October of 2018, Michelle released her debut album, For Love. Recorded at Flagstaff’s Mudshark Studios, For Love, is a mix of 14 original songs with influences ranging from Indie rock to America. Michelle has “a voice that makes you feel like you’re home” -Flagstaff Live, Oct. ‘18. Her music ranges from deep and soulful ballads, to dreamy indie pop, to fun, boot-stomping country. Her vocals are powerful, yet vulnerable, and have been compared to many of her idols, including Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin and Lucinda Williams.

Pilcrow is made up of Flagstaff music veterans, drummer Andrew Lauher and guitarist Ryan Heinsius. Andrew is a student of jazz and a master of pushing music in unexpected directions with his ever-changing rhythmic experimentation. Ryan combines a love for blues and country-twang guitar styles with songwriting that incorporates the social commentary, storytelling and historical perspective of folk music.  Together as Pilcrow, they’re continuing a musical conversation that’s been going for more than a decade. Ryan and Andrew have been central to well-known outfits like the Voluntary String Band and Crow Wing, as well as many other individual projects based in northern Arizona and throughout the country. Pilcrow frequently performs as an electric trio, but also as a stripped down acoustic guitar-and-drums duo that highlights their evolving songcraft.

Viola & the Brakemen is a band established in 2012 by singer\songwriter Brian White from Tucson, AZ. Viola & the Brakemen’s musical styles are ever-changing to fulfill the sounds heard in Brian’s head.  These writings began in 1987. Viola & the Brakemen have played at multiple festivals including Pickin’ in the Pines Bluegrass Festival, Flagstaff Hullabaloo, Cornucopia Festival, Flagstaff Folk Festival, Made in the Shade Beer festival, New Mexico’s Road to Rich’s Festival and they have shared the stage with artists such as Ricky Skaggs, Steep Canyon Rangers, Calexico, The Infamous String Dusters, The Steeldrivers, The Kitchen Dwellers, The Railsplitters, Michael Foucault and L.A.’s Rose’s Pawn Shop.
