Fake News, the Media, and the 2018 Election

Presented by NAU College of Social and Behavior Science at NAU SBS West

Stephen Nuño, an Associate Professor in the department of Politics and International Affairs at NAU is presenting: "Fake News, the Media, and the 2018 Election".

The press has been seen as the bedrock of democracy since the founding of our government. But technology and our economy have changed how we consume and disseminate news since the Constitution was written. While the 2016 Presidential Election certainly did not introduce us to the notion that candidates and interested parties will try to influence information, the rise of online media has democratized information in ways that are shaping news consumption in unprecedented ways. My lecture will look at how news is produced and how must we adapt to technology and the realities of economic incentives in order to foster a better civic culture moving forward. The 2018 election will give us great insight as our first post-fake news election and teach us new lessons going into the next Presidential election.
