Powerpoint Workshop: Climate Change

Presented by N. Arizona Climate Change Alliance at Lutheran Campus Ministry

Develop basic skills for using PowerPoint to communicate to ordinary public on Climate Change issues and solutions. The public is invited to this helpful training to develop capable speakers to reach out on climate change. The content will be learned and mastered step by step. But you have to be willing to speak in front of small groups of 20 or so on climate change.

The four main areas to be addressed are:

• The benefits of dealing with climate change

• Laudato Si and climate change

Climate Action Plans

• The carbon fee and dividend approach.

--Peter Friederici presents An overview of useful tools: conveying science to the general public Peter is a Director and Associate Professor in the NAU School of Communication. He has a MA in Sustainable Communities.

--Dr. Tom English is the featured teacher for the day. He has lectured on environmental topics such as Climate Change at over one hundred universities, and has given eight White House presentations. He has directed major environmental programs for IBM, GE, JPL, EPA, and the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group. His work resulted in saving several billion dollars.See the extensive biography below.

Bio of Dr. Tom English

Dr. English is the President of the TESSI Endangered Species Institute, and the Creation Care Educator for the Presbyterian Church's Synod of Southern California and Hawaii. He frequently lectures on Environmental Issues to university, civic, industrial, and church groups. He is ranked in the top 0.1 % of the Climate Reality Project’s speakers program. His talks include the following:

He is co-editor of a book -Witness for the Earth: Coalescing the Religious Environmental Movement. He is on the Board of the World Stewardship Institute, a member of the Steering Committee of the National Religious Coalition on Creation Care, a member of North County Climate Change Alliance, and a member of the Citizens Climate Lobby.

He has directed major environmental programs for IBM, GE, JPL, EPA, and the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group. He led the Manufacturing Group’s effort to voluntarily reduce toxic environmental releases by 86%. William Reilly, former Administrator of the U.S. EPA, stated that "This reduction led the entire world." It also achieved significant savings for the participating companies. His legislative accomplishments include improving the California Clean Air Act, which resulted in savings of several billion dollars.

Dr. English advised President Carter's Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the Government of Sweden on high level nuclear waste disposal. At the U.S. EPA, he directed an $80 million per year Energy & Environment Program. He also directed an epidemiological study of 40,000 people to determine the human health effects of air pollutants. He was Technical Director of the Regional Air Pollution Study (RAPS), a research program on the long-range transport and transformation of urban air pollutants. He received a Presidential Award for leading the recovery program to fix the F-111 fighter/bomber after the wings fell off the aircraft.

His academic background includes a postdoctoral MS in environmental engineering, a Ph.D., and a MS in electrical engineering, and a BS in physics. He taught environmental and engineering courses at 6 universities. Dr. English presented a three-day environmental management seminar in Moscow. He and his wife, Jan, live in Carlsbad, CA. They have four adult children and seven grandchildren.
