    Speaker Kristine Vejar

Join best selling author and natural dye expert Kristine Vejar in an evening of lively discussion on natural dyeing in the modern world on Saturday, June 3rd. The appetizer/cash bar reception kicks off at 4 p.m. in the Pioneer Museum Barn, 2340 N Ft Valley Rd in Flagstaff. Kristine's talk begins at 5:30 p.m. in the adjacent Coconino Center for the Arts and will be followed by a book signing.

Kristine Vejar is the founder of A Verb for Keeping Warm, a 1700 square foot space in Oakland, California and is comprised of a shop selling yarn, fiber, and fabric, two classrooms, two dye studios, and a natural dye garden. Kristine learned to sew and knit as a young child from her Grandmother. While in college, she traveled to India to study Art and Architecture and began researching textiles created by a group of nodams named Rabari. This is also when she discovered natural dyeing. Through her work in India, she realized textiles can embody endless potential to communicate identity and ethics and the creation of textiles provides a space to build community and inspired her to create A Verb for Keeping Warm.

Through classes focused upon natural dyeing, knitting, sewing, spinnng, and weaving, and via materials offered through her shop (many of which support US based farms and manufacturing), Kristine strives to preserve long standing textile traditions and to support others working to create textiles and clothing. Kristine has her own naturally dyed lines of yarn, fiber, and fabric. She enjoys working with farmers to to use their wool to create yarn. In 2015, Kristine published her first book, The Modern Natural Dyer (Abrams). When she isn't working in her studio, she can be found cuddling her two mini-dachshunds, drinking wine, eating chocolate, and traveling the world in search of those who also practice natural dyeing.
