Auditions for "The Great Gatsby"

Jay Gatsby (Lead): Male, 28-35
lives an extravagant life that he finances with the money he has earned by illegal means; likes showing off and always throws big parties at his mansion; believes his only possible chance to get Daisy back is being rich; trying to get his love back is the only thing he lives for; little by little he loses his sense of reality completely; a dreamer, but to complete his dream of living a perfect life he has to reunite with Daisy.

Nick Carraway (Lead): Male, 28-35
tolerant, open-minded, quiet, and a good listener, and, as a result, others tend to talk to him and tell him their secrets; trusted and treated as a confidant; with his Midwestern sensibility he finds the East an unsettling place, and he becomes disillusioned with how wealthy socialites lead their lives.

Daisy Buchanan (Lead): Female, 21-29
a woman who likes to play with men she loves to exaggerate and extemporize; fascinates most men and enjoys being the center of attention; hopes to be liked and popular among the men around her, wants to impress them; enraptures men with her transparent nature and has a strong desire for love; has learned to think only of herself whether other people get hurt or not.

Tom Buchanan (Supporting): Male, 30-37
an athlete and polo-player; seen as an idol; good-looking, sporty and tough guy who has verifiable “physical accomplishments”; a sturdy, muscular man with “arrogant eyes”; commands attention through his boisterous and outspoken behavior; comes from an old social and immensely wealthy family; very egoistic and has a high opinion of himself and violent tendencies.

Jordan Baker (Supporting): Female, 24-29
young, single woman of wealth, admired by men wherever she goes; savvy and comes off as somewhat shallow in her approach to life; a famous professional golf player, she represents the new type of woman in the ’20s; harsh, self-sufficient and does not need a man to help and guide her through life; very sportive and masculine with an erect carriage; always wants to win whatever it takes.

Myrtle Wilson (Supporting): Female, 30-40
a representative of the lower class who longs to gain entrée into the world of the elite by having an affair with Tom wherein she exhibits all the power and dominance she finds lacking in her everyday life; eventually suffers a tragic end at the hands of her lover’s wife; would rather be treated like a dog by someone who has money instead of being cared for by someone who has no money.

George Wilson (Supporting): Male, 30-40
Myrtle’s unassuming husband; a bland, spiritless man who is faintly handsome and pale; his only hope is starting a new and better life somewhere else; called “so dumb he doesn’t know he’s alive”; runs a garage and seems trapped by his position in life.

Meyer Wolfsheim (Supporting): Male, 50-64
seems to have a dark past; a professional gambler, rumored to have fixed the 1919 World Series; helped build Gatsby’s fortune, although the wealth came through questionable means.

Lucille McKee/Mrs. Michaelis (Supporting): Female, 21-64
actor plays both roles. McKee is the neighbor of Myrtle in NYC, silly and vapid; Michaelis is George Wilson’s restauranteur neighbor who comforts him after Myrtle is killed, one of the few charitable characters.

Chester McKee/Waiter/Cop McKee (Supporting): Male, 21-64
artist, effeminate, and snobby.

We are also looking for 1-3 musicians who can play jazz music from the era during the show.

Cold readings from the script – audition materials will be provided at the audition.
We will also need extras for the party scenes.
